Intercooler installs? (pics request)

Just trying to get some ideas for I/C mounting on my car. Anyone care to share pictures/details of their setups?

I'm really considering an air/water setup to save space. And I'm going with shaved* bumpers soon, so most FMIC's won't fit the bill.

*shaved = not just taking the bumpers off, but sculpting the sheet metal underneath to give it a more finished look. See: [link]

I remember a thread like this in the last year or two. Would be worth a search.

Patrick are you doing any duct work for cooling air control? I mean other than the metal behind the interchanger

The back of the radiator is exposed to the engine compartment and there's a big foam seal that touches the hood so it's pretty sealed. The air should flow through it pretty well, I need to get some pusher fans though.

FYI it's a generic trans cooler from advance auto, you have to cut the ends off because they are very restrictive.

Four years ago but it worked very well. I cut out the bottom of the battery box out, mounted the heat exchanger angleing down with a electric puller fan mounted to the back of it.

That's the best, I am also considering relocating the radiator to somewhere under the car where there isn't so much engine heat hanging around.

I can't find the thread but I also removed the fog lights from the MTech kit and replaced them with ducts, I then mounted a HE behind each duct.

This is exactly what I was planning to do Duke (Damn I gotta quit re-inventing the wheel here! )

So you plumbed the IE radiators in series? I've relocated the battery to the trunk already. I'm thinking of stealing these ideas.

That is if I can ever make up my mind: Air/air or air/water!

Too many conflicting choices sometimes.

Yes....If I remember correctly the water flow would be (looking at front of car) out of the intercooler - center HE - water pump - tank - BBHE- right FLHE - left FLHE and then back to the input of the intercooler. Tony T. - could answer for sure because he has the car.

The puller fan that was mounted on the back side of the BBHE was connected to the electric radiator fan. I had a manual switch to activate both fans if I was running the A/C or in traffic. The two fans forced air through the two larger HE (center and BB).

Stealing ideas is the way to go, saves you a lot of money and trouble.

for shits and giggles my e30, exchangers are in parallel to help slow down the flow in the core to maximize its efficiency, it must work as i only saw a 15* rise on a 60-145 pull with only half of the exchanger surface exposed to clean air, since then i have made a concession to function over stealth and added a scoop to channel air to the slot i cut in bottom of bumper
Image
haven't done any testing with scoop and blower is wounded at moment. its helpful for bleeding to circulate from bottom to top of cores

Fits great but it definitely required some cutting of both the valance and the air dam. It didn't bother me but if you are scared to cut, another method would be needed.

Hey Brad D, what kind of intercooler is that and what size? Thanks.

Brad D, sorry to bump this years later. Your fmic is exactly what I plan to do to my car. I'm taking measurements but would really like to know what size your intercooler is and if you still have your car?

I put my intercooler behind my kidney grills due to installing an oil cooler
