Almost there..........(update)....................

Post by Duke »

Image

Soon......very soon. Snuck away to the garage yesterday and got the flywheel, clutch and bellhousing on. As you can see, its ready to go in. With some help, should be a 15 minute job. The weather is not helping either, highs in the 20's. Tools are cold, engine is cold, car is cold, floor is cold, air is cold.............makes for a lot of time with the hands and tools being warmed by my heater.

UPDATE

Engine is in!!!! My two office mates helped me out. Good thing because it took three of us. Pictures this evening.

My only concern thus far is that the waste gate is touching the brake lines??? Will have to do some minor mods to get clearance.

You need about 1/2 inch worth of washers under the motor mount.

That would have been nice to know before myself and two others installed it :@

I will use my floor jack to see if I can get the right side up.

Make sure to put some spacers under the transmission mount for the same side -- otherwise, the mounts will be pre-loaded.

The proximity of the wastegate to the brake lines has been an area of concern for my installation (the interference is more with the 745 setup). Duke, to be on the safe side you may want to look at some type of heat shielding for the brake lines in this area.

Duke,

For the amount of money you have paid, I think TCD should provide you with proper spacers to correct this problem. Something machined out of stainless would probably do the trick. Ditto for the transmssion spacers per Shawn's suggestion.

TCD's done such a nice job up to this point and then offers a hack solution.

Rich,

Every car is different. Some require no washers, some require one and some require a few. It's kind of difficult to improve upon a washer.

For these issues we are planning on purchasing a large amount of stainless steel washers which will be melted down then formed into a billet. From this we will then machine thin circular discs which have concentric holes in them to be used singularly or in multiples to adjust the position of the engine as needed. They will cost $12.95 each and we will call them "shims".

Sweeney, don't forget to machine the TCD name into each shim! That way, you don't have to worry about legal problems if someone uses a non-TCD washer. . . um, shim. RE: the thread on titanium BBS bolts:

You stole my idea! :) How do you think I fit my setup in my car without moving the ABS lines? LOTS AND LOTS of washers

How about some laminated shims...

That way, you can peel away each 0.002" layer until you get it juuuust right!

Forget that crap, Shawn! Just put a block of wood under it. That'll work, right? ;)

There 's that great BMW manufacturing prowess rearing it's ugly head again. Kinda of like why a strut bar fits fine on one 5er but not another. And of course we all seem to have tire interference issues in the left rear but not the right. At least BMW was consistent in this area. ;)
