524td engine rebuild

Post by Mar7ian »

So im tearing down my m21 and started to think.. is it possiable to twin turbo an 85 524 and keep it from blowing itself apart? I think its a great concept idea but feel excution would be a pain. I was wondering if anyone on here has ideas, hints or opinions on the matter.

Hi. I have been working with my own m21, and used VNT turbo for more low end response. And to keep the pressure in high revs, up to 5000 rpm. My goal is not top power, but noticably more than stock. 150hp, i guess? If you are aiming for huge numbers and twin/compound turbo, read Dieselboost`tread in the Eye Candy section. Good luck rebuilding.

I would love to hear where you're getting parts, and what parts are getting replaced.

I'm talking in terms of rings and bearings for the pistons and such. Seems like rings are around $100 per piston lol or $200 for a kit from mahle.

Well im pretty much replacing everything from the oil pan up. I have sourced a whole motor from europe with the manual conversion so i can take away that damned american auto hahah. So i have pretty much a whole parts m21 and another place out west i get parts from too

Very nice I take you'll just use the block (with stuff installed) that has the best compression and cleanest cylinder walls?

Or tearing both down and using the best looking parts from each unit?

Super cool on getting a manual M21 I've recently just acquired a lot of parts for my auto-manual conversion but won't do until next year.

Im just gonna try to rebuild everything on the new motor and keep what i have left as spare parts since most parts seem impossiable to find hahah. But as of now my head needs a rebuild my cam was wore down a 1/4 inch.
