hey guys new to td just got a 86 524td couple of days ago and it has a problem with the radiator on the drivers side of the top side of the radiator there is a plastic fitting or something coming off and it had been melted or shattered not to sure but just wondering do i need a new radiator or would i be able to find just that part somewhere?

Welcome! Replace the radiator. Broken plastic is broken. This site is full of excellent information on the e28, you need only search. Replace the timing belt!! Do it now. Unless you have documentation it was done recently. Not doing it is the quickest way to junk your new acquisition. Enjoy your new car. The td's really are terrific when dialed in correctly.

I am not an owner of a 524td, but I find this list intriguing.

I have to play the devil's advocate (I know, I hate Ford too ) but how many of these M21-powered bad boys you think are still on the road?

I actually found a nice example for sale a year or so ago for $10k. It's still a ford though....

I believe I need to clarify since I got an email from someone on here about this post. If you click on the link and go to the Wikipedia article about the Lincoln Continental Mark VII and scroll down to the section titled "Powertrain", you will see the following sentence:

"The engine choices were a 5.0 L V8 and rare (200-500 made) 2.4 L I6 diesel. The diesel was a BMW design with a turbocharger. At least one diesel Mark VII was equipped with 5-speed manual transmission. It was available on all trim levels until 1986.[5]"

Under that there is a chart that list all of the engines available in the Mark VII. The very first row is MY, trim from "1984-1985", second column is Engine Displacement, Type "2,443 cc (149 cu in) BMW M21 I6". Third column is Fuel System "Diesel".

I don't mean to sound like a dick but I wanted to make sure everyone knew that I am talking about a BMW M21 turbo diesel engine being used in the 1984-1985 Lincoln Continental Mark VII. I think it is interesting that a) Ford bought them & b) BMW sold them to Ford. I'm intrigued with the engine since it is closely related to the M20 in my 528e and I know absolutely nothing about diesels. That is all.

Got mine back in August '12. I got it pretty much stock, except for a few strange mods. Looking forward to swapping out the stock automatic transmission with a 5-speed manual. On to more pressing needs, I think the turbo is gone. Any tips on rebuilding/upgrading?
