F/S: '81 733 5 speed - FREE! --Want a 5spd in your 745?

I mentioned that I have a G265 for sale in another thread and that it came with a beater 733. => http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=38507
Well I generated a lot of interest with that so here is the story...............

Every year the Lone Pine Time Trials is held in Lone Pine CA. The LPTT is one of the longest sanctioned auto crosses in the country, so it is also one of the fastest due to its length, just over 2 miles. I've hit 90 through the cones in the back section. It is as well one of the longest continuously running auto crosses; I think this year was 36 consecutive. The course is set up at the old air strip at Manzanar. It is in pretty bad shape so your car takes a beating. It is pretty hard to take your nice car out and have it pelted with big chunks of asphalt. So the crew here at the SportsCar Club @ UCSB decided to create their own class of race car: the Beater Class. That way we could have a great time playing and not have to worry about our cars! The rules for Beater Class? Well, there really aren't any except one; any car, any condition, for no more than $800 total. So the cheaper the purchase price the more you could spend on upgrades!

So this is how the 733 was happened upon. It ran but it had a bad clutch master. Replaced that and she was showing real promise to be a contender at Lone Pine this past June. We cut one coil off the stock springs and started to take the excess weight off, she was coming along nicely. Well, two days before the race something in the ignition went wrong and killed the coil. I have never seen a coil die and let me tell you it is not a pretty site. Black goo bubbling from places it shouldn't bubble. We replaced the coil and tried to figure out what had happened but it remained a mystery. There was a fair amount of cluged wiring but it just wasn't clear what happened. The car started to run real rich and rough, completely undriveable. It ended up parked and never got to see the track. After the fact nobody has had time to try to figure out what the deal is with it, and nobody seems to want deal with it. It does start and run but it is horribly rich, so much it blew flames out the tailpipe, as you can see from the pictures the plastic on the bumper is melted.

She is not in any way a pretty car. I am sure with a little time and effort she could be made to be a good driver again, but I don't think she will ever be a looker. She is in my opinion a parts car.

It has not been registered for a while so if you don't part it you have to pay penalties.

Want to put a 5 speed in your e23 745i? Here is your ticket, all you need is the motronic bell housing and it is done.

VIN: WBAFF3303B7351479

Pm me if your interested, if nobody wants her she is going to the junkyard.

Ok, it's my turn to say it: "If only you weren't on the other side of the country." Seriously.

What, no pics of the flames shooting out???

I blew up a coil in my 2002 when I had a battery charger on it and left for a few hours. Big mess.

I'll bet it's gone by Monday morning!
