Rescued 524TD
Re: Rescued 524TD
Anyone know how much boost I can run with a stock head gasket? And how to remove the vacuum pump?
Re: Rescued 524TD
Pics not showing up.
No idea on the boost, stock blow-off valve is ~13psi. Vac pump you'd just have to remove the cam cover and pull the pump. 2 bolts or nuts, forget which. Its pretty easy and obvious once you have the cover off.

Re: Rescued 524TD
Looks much better with the green fur removed and the busted spoiler fixed.
Re: Rescued 524TD
Nice work! Was the boost gauge already there?
One important thing if you've not heard this - never rev the engine while in park or neutral with the 4HP22 transmission. Yeah, I didn't believe it either, but it's real.
It will blow its seal.

Re: Rescued 524TD
I think there is some updated seal that fixes that problem if you rebuild it. Don't know the particulars but I know I've seen it before. I just don't rev mine because I don't feel like finding out.
Re: Rescued 524TD
Yes, I’ve heard that. No the boost gauge I’ve installed after turning up the pump and adjusting the waste gate. Currently set at 18lbs on stock head gasket. Been debating on putting on my HX35 but I probably should invest in a MLS head gasket first.
Re: Rescued 524TD
Where in CA are you?
Re: Rescued 524TD
Central Valley. Near sac.
Re: Rescued 524TD
I'd honestly put an intercooler on before adding more turbo. Past a certain point you're just making more heat rather than really adding more air to the engine. Also needs more fuel to go with that extra air.
Re: Rescued 524TD
Yes and intercooler would go along with the hx35. I have a spare exhaust manifold and still trying to figure out how to space the turbo out far enough without compromising supporting the weight of the turbo. Also I’m not a fan of cutting into rad support, looking into water to air cooler.
I’m interested in this updated seal on the trans, wasn’t able to find any info on it. Anyone know about this?

The hx30w fits REALLY nicely. you have to notch the head about 2mm to clear the "snail" great power potential and the stock wastegate is set at 21psi!
Re: Rescued 524TD
the clutch seal is for the "A" clutch. This should give some more details on what happens when it fails and how to fix it

personally i'm opting for the lazy man's "just don't rev the engine in park" solution. Mine shows no tendency to creep in neutral and it works perfectly fine so I think its OK for now.

Re: Rescued 524TD
Alright, well I did a thing. Going to put off swapping turbos for a bit. Found a 84 e28 at the local pick n pull a 533i with a getrag 260. Pulled the trans, pedal box, drive shaft, clutch slave and master. Shifter and linkage were already missing. $250.
Anyone have any suggestions on a clutch and flywheel that have done this swap?

Re: Rescued 524TD
that getrag 260 is not the getrag 260 you need. you need a 260 from a M20 vehicle since the m21 is based on the m20 block. your 260 is off an 533? so its a M30 260. it will be clocked all wrong and wont work. if you put the m30 and m20 getrag next to eachother you will understand. I would sale or trade that m30 5 speed box for a m20 5 speed box out a 325e or a 528e. Sorry! -Paul

Drifting. Yes, the auto...
Now this weekend, found a wreaked and abused E28 5 speed. Doing the swap finally.

Re: Rescued 524TD
nice!!! you will not regret it! makes it super easy to have all the parts you need. be sure to put the 6 timing pins in the new flywheel. for tach and fuel control. -Paul
Re: Rescued 524TD
curious how much more go it will have with the manual. Has to be an improvement, autoboxes suck up power and fun.

Do you have any recommendations on intercoolers?gadget73 wrote: May 26, 2020 9:34 AM I'd honestly put an intercooler on before adding more turbo. Past a certain point you're just making more heat rather than really adding more air to the engine. Also needs more fuel to go with that extra air.
I don't have the stock air box installed and have some room in the side. Was thinking it might be a nice place for a ALH intercooler?
Thanks
